6 Uplifting Ways To Conquer Winter Blues This Year

Winter can often feel like the longest season of the whole year. The days are short, making it hard to find time to get outside and stay active. The vast majority of us leave for work when it is dark and come home after the sun has already gone down!

Because of this, many people get the winter blues. This ranges from mild depression to not wanting to get out of bed at all. However, it doesn't have to be that way.

Here are some ways to beat the winter blues.

1. Stick to your diet

Have you ever gained weight during the winter? It can happen due to inactivity, holiday eating, and trying to cheer yourself up with comfort food. However, this can add to the winter blues.

In fact, many studies show that there is a correlation between your diet and mental health. Because of this, you should continue to eat well, filling your stomach full of vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins.

2. And your exercise regimen

Exercise is essential for good health so, even if you can't take your daily walks outside, it is essential to find ways to exercise throughout the long winter. If you are used to exercising outdoors, you may want to join a gym so that you can continue to stay fit and relieve your stress while it is cold outside.

3. You may need to add vitamins to your diet

Since you aren't getting the sun that you are used to, it can be helpful to add some vitamin D to your diet. However, you may be missing more than that. Because of this, you may want to take a multi-vitamin to see if it helps with your mood.

4. Take time to get outside

No matter how cold it is out, it is important to find ways to get some fresh air. Bundle up and get outside. Even if you are only able to be there for a few minutes a day, a short walk can help reduce your stress and depression. You may also find yourself sleeping better when you find time to spend outside every day.

5. Try something new

Winter can be a great time to try something new. You may have some extra time on your hands, so you might want to pick up that new hobby that you have wanted to try. Do you want to try painting? A new exercise class?  Read a book that you haven't had the time for? You may have the time to get through it over the next several months.

6. Don't be afraid to get help

If you feel like your case of the winter blues is worse than just mild depression, you may want to seek help. Don't be afraid to voice your concerns to your family and friends. However, if that isn't enough, you may want to talk to a professional therapist. He or she will help you learn to cope with the weather so that you can enjoy this time of year!

Winter can be a hard time for a lot of people. They feel overwhelmed by the holidays and often gain weight because they are stuck inside more than usual. However, by eating right and making sure that you get enough exercise, your mood should improve.

What are your ways of coping this winter?
